Yes, Bordeaux in synonymous with wine but hold your horses, there are other vineyards in France that you can visit and enjoy. Then, why Bordeaux?
Bordeaux was the second place I visited after I landed in Paris and it’s festive. I didn’t feel different from the others I passed by and those I spoke with. There was an air of welcome and there was no look saying “This is a tourist” even though I know I looked and acted like one. Alighting from the bus that took me away from La Rochelle, the first thing I noticed is the architecture. The buildings, bridges and even the lamp post are simply works of art. The summer heat will make you scuttle and hide from exploring but knowing that you are in a place some people will die for, you’ll be ready to sweat it out, put your shades on and seize the day like the French does, from what I have observed.

Vineyards aside, I don’t think anyone can deny the fact that it is Wine Country and for that, acquiring a basic understanding of wine is a must. There are wine tasting classes that lasts for a few hours, a vineyard tour that includes wine tasting or check out the School of Wine. It’s not just all about wine in Bordeaux. Let me show you a few places to visit and hang-out to people watch.
1. La Cite du Vin

A wine museum that not just teaches you about wine, vineyards and how it’s made but the science of wine too! It can get technical but hey, you actually have the whole day (afternoon for me as I came late due to jet lag) and more. It’s fascinating, not just the exhibits, activities and wine tasting (haven’t I mentioned that before?) but the architecture of the whole place itself. You’ll see various vineyards around the world as well as their products and uniqueness. I left the place feeling like an expert.

2. Bordeaux Cathedral
Simply breathtaking Gothic cathedral dedicated to Saint Andrew. . This is the one of amazing churches I’ve seen. It’s massive and there’s a certain feeling of awe that will turn up once you have a look at the church even from afar.

3. Rue St. Catherine
It is quite famous as it is considered as the longest shopping street in Europe and it’s not just for shopping. Take a walk down history lane and imagine how it was in the 19th century. Yes, it was already a shopping street since then but of a different kind- butchers, fruit vendors and others. Now, it’s one of the places one needs to see and experience especially when in Bordeaux!

4. Fete de la Musique in June
So yes, Bordeaux was my second stop because (1) it’s Bordeaux! and (2) it’s the Fete de la Musique! A wine, culture and art haven celebrating music – what more can I ask for? So, even after getting lost. walking in tears and finding the hostel to have been demolished and still being built according to google, waze and maps.me, (which was actually the wrong building but that’s another story) and jet lagged, I slept the moment I could unpack my sleeping clothes and just didn’t bother that it was the Fete de la Musique night.
After a few incidents with this arrogant French woman (I dare not call her a lady for she was not even close!) in the room, I finally pushed myself out of the bed, took a bath and allowed the music of a gazillion pied pipers lead me out of the building and into the beautiful snares set up by these bewitching musicians.

It was 8:00 p.m. and by this time in Asia, you’re expected to be home or at least on the way home. But, I was in France! Everyone was walking to their own traps, seduced by a music only they can hear. What about safety, you ask? You don’t even have to ask. I found myself walking with others going to the same direction and often, it was an empty street with laughter and music from faraway – and it was fine! Growing up in Manila and watching all those CSI episodes have made me scared but not here. Not in Bordeaux!
When you hear music you like or are just curious, go have a look. You will notice people assigned to keep the place safe – and you are safe. Go ahead and ask them, in English and they will help you out – in English as well. Dance along with the music and the crowd. Buy a beer, look for an empty space and sit there. Or not. Drink, sway and enjoy. You need to love your own company to be able to enjoy this.
