The Kopi Tiam @ Pasar 8: A new weekend morning jaunt

Yes, we are all made up of routines.  It is our comfort zone, our auto pilot, the ‘no need to think’ rut that we tend to fall and stay in if given the choice.

BSD is where a number of Jakartans go early in the morning during the weekends – specifically to Pasar Modern.  However, when you just want a relaxing way to shop after  getting rid of the stress, Pasar Delapan is a great venue to tone down and replenish the calories you just burned.   My usual weekend routine consists of a jog in Alam Sutera and a short visit to the market for some essentials.  However, one weekend I deviated from my lethal regimen and tried one of the breakfast spots in Pasar 8 that is always full: The Kopi Tiam

This nook never runs out of patrons.  It follows a very simple formula: customers are welcome to order food from other vendors provided, of course, that they buy from them.  Simple yet powerful as this spot is never empty.  Well, except past noon at around when they will start packing up and people look for places that offer lunch or rice meals.  It has a relaxed atmosphere together with an attentive staff.  Now, what more can you ask for?

I recommend the manis (sweet) Coffee Tarik where they mix the coffee with a teaspoon of condensed milk and voila! Creamy and sweet coffee in just one swish- a very Indonesian way, I observed.  Plus, I discovered that I need to ask first if they still have bread as the Roti Bakar is one of the items in the menu that usually runs out first.  Order the Roti Bakar with Kaya and the soft-boiled eggs.  It’s one of my staple sweet-and-salty combination that keeps one’s tongue guessing on what is to come next.

Another Chronically Gallivanting recommendation is the Bubur Manado or Manadonese Porridge.  It’s a heavy breakfast meal for me and that is why it is best to share with friends.  It’s porridge mixed with a lot of other things as one can see in the photo.  Corn kernels and vegetables make this a full meal that is ready to sustain you with energy until lunch time and maybe even beyond.

Yup, these are the food ordered from the other eateries nearby.

As long as you order a few of their menu, you are free to shop from the others.  What else can you ask for?

I overstayed. This is how it looks like at 2:00 p.m. Come early!
